In the seminar, it was made clear that it was absolutely prohibited to take advantage of women, for men to abuse women was not allowed. It wasn’t even allowed to touch each other, to speak to someone of the opposite sex alone, especially in dark places, this was also prohibited.

A sense of empowerment was an important part of why many girls joined the NPA. Many of them reported feeling as if they had no voice in their own lives and were marginalized within their families. Other groups, like the MILF, did not have this kind of equality, and instead relied on girls to do things like cooking and cleaning. With the NPA and some other groups, girls are given leadership roles that they may otherwise struggle to attain due to their gender and the limited opportunities they might have a result of poverty. One girl who joined when she was thirteen said, “They made me ‘team leader’ for a short time because they thought I was alert and smart. Then I was trained to become a medic. They taught me traditional ways of healing.”
